Economy boosts new-vehicle sales

New car sales in New Zealand for the six months to the end of June were up just over four per cent on the same period last year, says the Motor Industry Association.
The growth reflects the strong housing market in Auckland and the Christchurch rebuild, says David Crawford, the MIA’s chief executive.
“With a strong New Zealand dollar and economic confidence in our two largest cities, we are on track to sell more than 100,000 new vehicles for the year,” said Crawford. Last year 100,795 new vehicles were sold.
Sales of 14,754 commercial vehicles to the end of June were up 26 per cent on the first six months of last year. June’s 3181 sales were the strongest since June 1982.
It was also the strongest June for passenger cars since 2005. Mid-year sales of 7542 units brought the total to 39,781 for the first six months of 2013, a hike of 4.3 per cent on the same period last year.
The combined total of 54,535 passenger and commercial vehicles was up almost 10 per cent on the first half of 2012.
Toyota was the market leader last month with sales of 1433 passenger cars and 917 commercials, a 21.9 per cent share.
Ford was second with 1210 registrations for 11.3 per cent, followed by Holden with 1097 and 10.2 per cent.
The top three passenger vehicles in June were the Toyota Corolla (416), Toyota RAV4 (343) and Hyundai Santa Fe (312).
The top three commercials were the Toyota Hilux (665), Ford Ranger (416) and Nissan Navara (286).
The workhorse Hilux was the year’s best-selling vehicle at the end of June, its 2449 registrations pipping the second-placed Corolla’s 2424. Third was Hilux rival Ford Ranger (2197) and fourth was the small Suzuki Swift (1649).
The sports utility vehicle remains the most popular. Over six months of 2013, 28 per cent of all registrations were SUVs. In June, 29 per cent were SUVs.
The cab/chassis commercial segment took a 19 per cent share for the six months until until the end of June and 22 per cent in June alone.
SUVs dominate sales across the Tasman, too, in what is shaping up to be a record sales year.
Between January and June, 170,539 SUVs have moved out of showrooms – almost one in three vehicles overall.
More vehicles were sold in online casino Australia in June 2013 than any other month to date –118,758, topping last June’s then-record 112,566 sales – while the year-to-date figure of 573,711 units is up 4.7 per cent on the 2012 record of 1.12 million annual sales.
The Hilux was the top-selling car across the Tasman last month, but its Corolla stablemate still leads the overall sales charts.
